"Mother and Daughter" By Gary Soto

Poverty

By Andrew F.

In mother and daughter, it all starts off with a family who doesn't have the money that a lot of families normally would. Yollie, the daughter, is playing pranks on Mrs.Moreno, her mother, in her spare time. They both get back at each other and usually apologize or act like nothing happened. They both love each other very much, and try to get along with some disagreements.

Yollie comes home from school and her asks her mom if she can go to a dance, but she reminds her mother moreno that she doesn't have a dress. Her mom pulls out a dress covered in black with holes and rips. Her mom said that she could fix it up and that it would be good as new again. Yollie is unhappy with the dress even when her mother fixes it up for her.

Yollie said to the mother that it still looks terrible. Her mother said nonsense it will be just fine for the dance. Yollie ends up taking the dress to the dance because she has no choice. Before she leaves the house her mother said I hope you have a good time at your dance.yollie arrives at the dance and has fun until it started to rain and her dress started to get ruined.

The rain almost turns her dress to ash, as the rain started to almost melt the dye off the dress. Yollie returns home after the dance and her mother asks if everything is alright. Yollie, crying, said no, the dress is cheap, it's junk. The end of the story teaches you that you should respect what you have because other people might not be as fortunate as you.

The story mother and daughter teaches a good lesson in that you should be grateful for what you have. Poverty affects many people in america and is hard to overcome due to the standards to live. This short story is a good reminder to respect what your parents do for you because they do try very hard. Also respecting god is a very important thing to do because he is the one who gave you your family.

Worry

Danielle M.

Worry, sometimes it's good sometimes it's bad. Like how your mother worries you will burn yourself on the stove. Or how you worry about how you can't do something. I’ve worried so much about high school that I have forgotten to enjoy middle school. In The story “Mother and Daughter” Yollie’s mother is so worried about the future that she forgets that Yollie is miserable in the present.

Yollie’s mother is so worried she is forgetting to think about her daughter. Towards the middle of the book Yollie’s mother says they don't have enough money to buy a new dress for the dance, but they actually did. Yollie’s mother just wanted to use it for college. ‘“We don’t have the money’ said her mother, genuinely sad because they couldn't buy the outfit even though there was a little money stashed away for college.” This shows that even though she did have a little money she was so worried about Yollie’s future she wouldn't buy her dress that Yollie really wanted now.

Towards the beginning of the short story Yollie’s mother tells Yollie to go study so she can become a doctor and take care of her when she gets old. ‘“Tienes que estudiar mucho,” Yollie’s mother said every time she propped her work-weary feet on the hassock. “You have to study a lot, then you can get a good job and take care of me.”’.That shows she is worried about Yollie’s future and her getting good grades so she can get a good job and take care of her mother. Also at the beginning of the short story “Mother and Daughter” Yollie mother buys Yollie a special lamp and a desk so when she studies she will not get tired from the glare.Yollie’s mother does this despite the fact that they don't have the money to spend on special stuff like that.  That shows she is worried about the future ahead. Like Yollie getting good grades now to make her future better. This also shows that Yollie’s mother is worried about the future and not how Yollie feels now.

Another reason you can tell Yollie’s mother is worried about the future is she puts a secret stash of money in a cigar box in the closet. “After Yollie hung up, her mother climbed, grunting, onto a chair to reach the top shelf in the hall closet.” “She reached behind a stack of towels and pushed her chubby hand into the cigar box where she kept her secret stash of money.”. This shows that she is afraid that the money can be stolen and that it is important to her. This also shows that Yollie’s mother is worried about the future.

Yollie’s mother in “Mother and Daughter” worry for the future overcomes her and she forgets about her daughter and how Yollie feels in the present. This is an example on how worry is bad. Also in a way what I did to myself and how I worried myself about the future and forgot to live in the present.

Family is Everything

By Chasity T.

Family is everything because they're there through the good and bad. They always have your back. They go through hard times with you and still want you to be happy. They may get annoying and bug you but they always have your back. If you need something you can always count on them to help. Even when they're going through payment troubles they try to help out and do everything they can to put a smile on your face. They make a lot of sacrifices to make sure you have a great education and everything you want and need. They aren't selfish when it comes to giving up money for someone they love and something you want. You may think they hate you but they do everything out of LOVE!!!!

In the short story of Mother and Daughter Yollie and her mother are poor and go through hard times as yollie gets older she wants to do more things but the things she wants to do cost money but her mother tries to make her happy and she and her mom put family before everything she picks her  her mom's happiness over everything else but her mom wants her to be happy so she saves up money for her to use when she's going somewhere Yollie is very grateful but sometimes she forgets to be thankful for what she has Yollie tries to impress her friends and her crush so they will like her.

Yollie learns later on in the story that her mom will always be there for her. Her mom made sacrifices to let her go to the movies. Yollies mother put her daughter's needs before hers because she could have kept the money and used it for stuff she needs. But she's a nice mother and really loves her daughter. So she saves up money to give to her daughter to use when she needs something or wants to go somewhere that cost.Yollie was really grateful when her mom did this at the end. Her mom really did love her because she made sacrifices.
