"Caring"

By Yasmin D.

Pets show us we need to care about people in our lives. They show us to be kind and respectful towards one another. Being caring is very important. It's important because it shows how we come out towards people. Pets bring out the true meaning of people, inside and out. Jesus tells us to “love thy neighbor” and people all over can learn from it. Not only being caring shows people the way we act, so does kindness. Caring for eachother and others brings us closer as people. It brings us together because they respect and trust you. In“A Boy and His Dog”, the boy teaches us we need to care about people in our lives.

In the book, it shows the boy takes care of Alphonse. He had taken him to the vet and always gave him his medicine. The boy would make sure he gave Alphonse the pills. “She gave me some red- pellet shaped arthritis pills and sent us home.” This tells is he actually does take him to the vet. In addition, the boy says “At the clinic, I sat down with Alphonse resignedly backed up between my knees.” The book says the boy walks to the clinic and his parents leave it up to him for Alphonse’s care.

Most importantly, Alphonse was all that the boy had and he couldn’t risk losing him. The boy says, “My dad’s always getting transferred. He’s in the army.” He doesn’t live a regular life like most kids do and his dad is never around. However, the boy says “ Alphonse is more than a dog, you see. Mom even sometimes calls him ‘Baby.’ Like he's my brother.” Alphonse is everything to the boy.

Altogether, the boy finds out Alphonse has cancer and makes him worried. He cares too much about Alphonse. The boy doesn't want to lose him. The boy says “ My dog has cancer. What do I tell him now? What am I going to do?” The way you read the text, it shows the boy was very anxious. His mother tries to give the boy sleeping pills but ends up refusing it. The boy didn't want to let go of Alphonse because it was his last night with him. This story makes us realize to care more about each other and show respect to our family.

This book “A Boy and His Dog” is a great example of showing care towards others. The boy took FULL responsibility of Alphonse. He took him on walks after school, even though he was tired or just didn't feel like doing it. Both of the characters show care in this story. Caring about each other can change the world.

"Hardships for Everyone"

By Marianne D.

Everyone has hardships in their lives, though some may be worse than others. I have had many hardships myself. In the story, “The Boy and His Dog”, Alphonse teaches us that throughout life, there can be many hardships. Through the story, Alphonse and his owner, Buddy, have to deal with their hardships as they go, no matter how bad they are.

In the story, Alphonse is an old dog, so it causes problems for him. Buddy says that Alphonse’s eyes are always runny because he is becoming blind. It is very hard for people to do things if they are blind. Buddy also says that Alphonse falls over because he has arthritis. Arthritis creates problems for people because it stops them from doing simple things properly. Life is a lot harder for Alphonse than it was when he was younger.

Many times during the book, situations come up that Buddy can’t stop or help with. The doctor tells Buddy that he can’t do anything to help Alphonse with his arthritis. Buddy can’t take Alphonse’s arthritis away, or stop him from getting older. Buddy says that whenever Alphonse fell over, he would look at Buddy as if saying thank you, and then get up. Buddy wouldn’t do anything, yet Alphonse thinks that Buddy does everything for him. Buddy probably wished he could do something for Alphonse, but he knows he can’t.

Buddy cares a lot about Alphonse, so when he finds out that Alphonse has cancer, it is a big hit for him. Buddy says he couldn’t stand it if Alphonse was hurting. It’s hard for Buddy to face the fact that Alphonse is in pain. Buddy ends his last night with Alphonse by telling him about what he wants to do in his life. Even though it is hard, Buddy accepts the fact that Alphonse will have to die. Cancer is a hard thing for anyone to deal with.

Life is hard at times for everyone, and you can’t stop hardships from coming. Though this is true, there are many times of happiness that help you deal with a fight you had with a friend, or the death of a family member. Hardships can help you deal with things later in life, even though you might not realize it then. No matter how hard life is for you, always remember that something good will eventually come.

The Boy and His Dog Literary essay

By Lucas D.

Loyalty brings people together. It brings people together because that means they can count on the person. When people can count on you they trust you and having trust is a big badge of honor. In this story a boy shows loyalness to his dog. The dog also shows loyalness to the boy like all dogs. In this essay I will be giving multiple examples of loyalness in the story that the boy and the dog both show.

One of the examples in the story is when the boy lets the dog into his room when the dog is all dirty. The dog is also smells very bad because the pills the boy gives the dog makes it fart. That means less sleep for the boy because he needs to open his window and it is cold out. It is also bad for him because the dog snores too. But the boy loves his dog so he lets the dog stay with him.

One example for the dog’s loyalty is when the dog listens to what ever the boy says. He listens to the boy even when he is not feeling well. He also listens when he doesn’t want to like when he has to go to the vet. No dogs like that so this dog is very good and loyal to his owner. The dog also listens to the boy when he is talking to the dog about his personal life.

This last example is with the boy. The boy always takes the dog on walks even after school when he might feel tired or just doesn't feel like doing it. He also takes FULL responsibility of the dog 24 7 because his parents work late at their jobs at the military base. This very loyal owner also takes the dog to the vet whenever he thinks the dog is sick or doesn't feel well. He doesn't just let it slide until it gets bad like most lazy pet owners.

In conclusion the boy and his dog is a story about great friendship and loyalty. Both of the characters show a lot of loyalty with each other throughout the story. These lessons about loyalty help us to be more loyal with each other throughout our daily lives.Either with family or friends. Loyalty is very important is very important in life so be as loyal to people as much as you can and you will have a good life.
